Glass, calomel reference electrode
Best for: Reference potentials in conjunction with a sensing half cell
Reference electrodes are necessary to complete the measuring circuit when using half cell sensing electrodes. The reference electrode is usually based on either silver or mercury with a choice of single or double junction configuration. Double junction electrodes enable the inner electrolyte to be kept away from the sample in case of interference. They also allow a wide variety of different electrolytes to be used in the outer chamber according to the specific application.
