Choosing the right pH Buffer

pH buffers come in a variety of different formats. Solutions, powders, sachets, capsules and pouches are all widely available in different pH values, accuracy and application type. Because pH measurement is only as good as the calibration that has preceded it, it is worth choosing and using buffers with care. At Thermo Electron, we recognise this by offering buffers and many other solutions in a variety of formats tailored to customers applications.
For accuracy, always look for buffers that are traceable to NIST standards. Colour coded buffers help to prevent calibration errors. Twin necked bottles are economical and easy to use, even in the field. The standard values of pH 4, pH 7 and pH 10 are usually available from stock and all other values are available on request. Buffer capsules have an excellent shelf life and make up a convenient 100ml at a time. For larger laboratories, 5 or 10 litre bottles save money. For the ultimate in accuracy, buffers certified to three decimal places are available.
For pure water measurement there is a special range of low ionic strength buffers to complement the special pH electrodes required for this application. Expert advice is available from Thermo Electron on electrode choice and correct practise to achieve good results in measuring pH in pure waters.
