Tris Buffers
Monitoring the pH of tris buffers is common practice in many laboratories throughout the world. Proteins present in these can often react with a conventional silver chloride electrode and severely shorten the electrode lifetime.
The K-Series range of electrodes from Thermo Electron are all tris- resistant. The KCMAWL electrode above has been used successfully in a laboratory in London where tris buffers are being made. Approximately 11-50 pH readings are taken per week. Previously a conventional silver chloride electrode was used and the lifetime was only 2 weeks. This was due to the silver ions in the reference cell reacting with the proteins in the tris buffer producing complexes that block the electrode junction.
In the K-Series electrodes, the silver ions of the reference cell are held in a polymer-filled glass coil. This prevents reaction with the sample, which can lead to contamination of the electrode. This patented polymer chemistry also provides exceptionally stable pH readings and low drift.
"We think this type is far superior to the standard silver chloride electrodes. We use it 8 - 10 times per day and it works very well."
